Showcasing the World- Renowned Bamboo Weaving Skills from Wenjiang's Workshop
A bamboo splitter and a pair of
skillful hands present the beauty of
intangible cultural heritage with the
spirit of craftsmanship. Today, we
explore the ninth batch of municipal
intangible cultural heritage projects
in Chengdu—Bamboo Weaving
(Qingshen Bamboo Weaving), which
is preserved and passed on by Ling
Qianya, a new resident of Wenjiang.

Ling Qianya comes from Leshan and
was mentored by Chen Yunhua, a
national representative inheritor of
Qingshen Bamboo Weaving. Five years
ago, she rented a small courtyard in
Helin Village, Wanchun Town,
Wenjiang District to establish Qianya
Bamboo Weaving Art Studio, dedicated
to the promotion and inheritance of
bamboo weaving's intangible cultural
heritage.
Stepping into the Qianya Bamboo
Weaving Art Studio, visitors are
greeted by an operation table brimming
with diverse raw materials and tools,
including bamboo filaments, scissors,
and tweezers. Studio members are
deeply engaged in crafting bamboo
products from these bamboo strips.
The display case features an impressive
collection of bamboo woven items,
from the common cups, bags, and
hanging decorations to decorative
pieces, all small yet exquisite.
Additionally, scrolls adorn the walls,
with bamboo strips as fine as silver
threads, lending a soft texture.

Nonetheless, these exquisite pieces
come with significant creative
challenges. "Some creations can require
over 20 days to complete alone, which
is quite demanding," explains Ling
Qianya. She adds that bamboo weaving
is commonly divided into flat, three-
dimensional, and bamboo over
porcelain types, with her expertise
lying in flat bamboo weaving—her
signature skill.
The challenge of weaving flat bamboo
pieces lies in their extreme thinness.
Ling Qianya explains that the process
begins with scraping, segmenting,
stripping, applying three protective
treatments, dyeing, and splitting into
filaments. After segmentation, over 30
meticulous steps are required: "Each
selected strip is scraped around a
hundred times until they are as thin
as a cicada's wing, then split with a
dividing needle, thinning them down to
a third of a human hair." She compares
this intricate process to "dividing a
centimeter-wide bamboo strip into 56
smaller pieces."
Similar to many intangible cultural
heritage crafts, how can we continuously
reinvigorate the tradition of bamboo
weaving culture?
Ling Qianya believes that to preserve
the art of bamboo weaving, an aspect
of our intangible cultural heritage, it is
necessary to engage a larger audience
in its protection and transmission. On
the one hand, bamboo weaving
workshops are conducted to increase
public awareness and understanding.
On the other hand, specialized training
programs in bamboo weaving, focusing
on intangible cultural heritage, are
offered to equip local residents and
special groups with diverse skills,
thereby facilitating flexible employment
opportunities from home. In 2024,
Ling Qianya was recognized as a
Master of Rural Skills in Wenjiang.
"Aligning with international standards,
going global, and enhancing the cultural
impact of intangible cultural heritage
techniques are crucial," expressed Ling
Qianya. Since 2024, she has showcased
her bamboo weaving creations at
various international art exhibitions.
These include the "Dragon Spring"
Chengdu Intangible Cultural Heritage
Exhibition at Melbourne's Museum of
Chinese Australian History (Chinese
Museum), the Exposition d'Art Image
et Imagination Sino-Française (Image
and Imagination: Sino-French Art
Exhibition) in Paris, France, and the
Craft Fair in Milan in Italy. These
events aim to promote intangible
cultural heritage on an international
scale.
The bamboo weaving artwork titled
"Chengdu, China," measuring 2 meters
by 0.34 meters, was crafted by Ling
Qianya and her team in celebration of
the 60th anniversary of Sino-French
diplomatic relations in 2024. This
intricate piece will be featured at the
Sino-French Image Symbiosis Art and
Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition
held in Nongyuan. Ling Qianya
elaborated, "From its initial design to
the final woven creation, this artwork
took a dedicated five-month period to
complete, involving the collaborative
efforts of eight studio members." The
piece employs bamboo strips in their
natural color as well as in red,
incorporating elements such as hibiscus
flowers, the Chengdu Research Base of
Giant Panda Breeding, and the Wuhou
Shrine, showcasing Chengdu's vibrant
prosperity.
Ling Qianya expressed, "During its
international exhibitions, numerous
foreign attendees were captivated by
the artistry of bamboo weaving, with
some even mistaking it for embroidery."
As an inheritor of this intangible
cultural heritage, she feels honored to
present her creations internationally,
taking on the important role of
widening the appreciation and
understanding of bamboo weaving
across the globe.
Looking toward the future, Ling Qianya
stated her intention to not only partake
in more overseas exhibitions but also
to seek international scholarly and
cultural exchange opportunities. She
wishes to collaborate with global artists
to innovate within the bamboo weaving
tradition, injecting new life and growth
into preserving this cultural heritage.
Additionally, the studio is intensifying
its creative endeavors to foster product
innovation and elevate quality, thereby
advancing the intangible cultural
heritage of bamboo weaving across
both domestic and international
markets through online and offline
sales channels.
