works of elegant willows, feeling the 

spring of impressive vigor. This week, 

we'll turn to — "Love of Butterflies and 

Flowers".

The elegant painting of fine brushwork 

with dozens of butterflies flying over 

flowers derives from Song Dynasty in 

pursuit of an artistic effect of detail, 

maturity, and prosperity. Extreme fine 

lines depicting the contour of butterflies 

and bright colors added by layer create 

accurate and vivid images.

画工笔蝴蝶数十只，飞舞于花卉之上，画面设色清丽淡雅，继承了两宋体工笔重彩的传统，追求一种细腻工稳和富丽华贵的艺术效果，先用极细的墨线勾出蝴蝶轮廓，用笔新细；然后敷以重彩，层层染，敷色轻雅而沉着，造型准确，刻画精细，树树如生。

The album of flowers, birds, beasts, 

and Buddha statues consists of 16 

water-and-ink color pieces. Fifteen of 

them are painted by Qian Hong, including 

peony, hibiscus, lotus, osmanthus, and 

plum blossom. This one presents a 

fascinating picture. On the left side is a 

butterfly parked on a flower, while in 

the middle is a cat curling into a ball yet 

staring at the butterfly as if the cute 

animal would fly to catch it the next 

second, which fully shows the vibrant 

scene in spring and summer.

绢本水墨设色写意花卉、鸟兽、佛像册页，一套十六幅。十五幅为钱鸿花鸟图，画折枝牡丹、芙蓉、荷花、金桂、梅花等。此幅情趣生动，画面左侧为一只蝴蝶停于一朵花之上，画面中部画一只四肢蜷曲的花猫，正目不转晴地町着花上的蝴蝶，仿佛下一秒就要飞扑而出，充分展现出了春夏时节万物发生的勃勃气象。

The album of flowers, birds, beasts, and 

Buddha statues consists of 16

page is a cluster of flowers in full bloom 

together with two butterflies, one coming 

and the other going, creating a fresh and 

beautiful air of spring.

The fine brushwork contains three 

peonies, two in full bloom and one in 

bud; a branch of white magnolia, three 

in full bloom and three in bud; and a 

brand of peach blossom, four in full 

bloom and seven in bud, among which 

branches and petals are all painted with 

the powder coating method, and leaves 

are inked heavily. Then, fine strokes 

decorate the petals and leaf veins. The 

painting style is simple and unrestrained, 

and the colors are bright and elegant, 

forming a delicate, bright and clear tone 

of brushwork technique.

设色工笔图，画折枝牡丹三枝，二盛开，一含苞待放，画折枝白玉兰一枝，三盛开，三含苞待放，画折枝桃花一枝，四盛开，七含苞待放，枝干、花瓣用撞粉法，花瓣细笔双勾，叶用浓墨，晕染后再勾叶筋。笔墨趋于简逸放纵，设色明净淡雅，形成兼工带写，明快清丽的格调。
