MEMORY‖ Yufu Ancient City

Long ago Yu Fu founded a kingdom,
creating a brilliant farming civilization.
Located in northwestern Chengdu,
Sichuan Province, Wenjiang District
abounds in talent, resources, and
cultural deposits. While sitting in the
hinterland of the Land of Abundance
recorded in classics, the district is
the most concentrated and
characteristic epitome of the
historical culture of the Chengdu
Plain. The long history has evolved
with cultural phenomena such as
sericulture, fishing and hunting,
farming, religion, and sacrifice,
laying a solid cultural foundation
for the district.

"Long ago, Can Cong and
Yu Fu founded the kingdom of
Shu." Reading the line created
by great poet Li Bai of the Tang
Dynasty (618–907 AD), we seem
to travel back to that remote age
when King Yufu relocated his
tribe along the roaring Minjiang
River to the flood-prone Chengdu
Plain where they later lived in
harmony with original inhabitants.
More than 4,000 years ago, the
Yufu Kingdom of ancient Shu was
founded in present-day Wenjiang
which witnessed historical
development together with
sericulture civilization, fishing
and hunting civilization, and
farming civilization.

Located in Wanchun Town,
Wenjiang District, Yufu Historical
Site reveals an early city form on
the vast Chengdu Plain. The
site is the earliest and largest
central settlement on the
Chengdu Plain. In a manner
of speaking, it can be defined
as the earliest garden city.
In local county annals,
including Wenjiang County
Annals compiled under the
reign of Emperor Qianlong
(1711–1799 AD) of the Qing
Dynasty (1636–1912 AD),
the Complete Geographical
Map of the Great Qing Dynasty,
the Wenjiang County Annals
under the reign of Emperor
Jiaqing (1760–1820 AD) of the
Qing Dynasty, and the Wenjiang
County Annals in the Republic
of China (1912–1949), Yufu
Historical Site is described,
"The capital of the Yufu Kingdom
is said to be 12 li (6 kilometers)
in the north of the local
government office, where the
historical site, locally called
Guchenggeng (literal meaning
of ancient city wall), can be
found." The most detailed
records are seen in the Local
Annals of Wenjiang under the
reign of Emperor Xuantong
(1906–1967 AD) of the Qing
Dynasty (also the last emperor
of Qing), "While Yu Fu did
farming on Jianshan Mountain,
he suddenly enlightened and
took a flight to the land of the
immortal. To memorize him,
his people built a temple. At
present, Yufu Historical Site
is found 12 li (6 kilometers) in
the north of Wenjiang, which is
said to be the capital of the
Yufu Kingdom."

The archaeological findings have
proved that Yufu Ancient City was
the administrative center of the
Yufu Kingdom. Two archaeological
excavations in 1996 and 1999
identified its basic form. The whole
site is a regular hexagon in the
plane, covering a total area of
400,000 square meters. It
descended from northwest to
southeast, in line with the water
flow direction of the Wenjiang
River, so it was conducive to
flood control. Yufu Ancient City
was built against the terrain,
mirroring the ancestral wisdom
of the unity of man and nature.

As Yufu Historical Site enjoys a
long history and a special status,
it was inscribed as a key historical
and cultural site under municipal-
level protection in 1985. The 1996
archaeological excavation has
played a significant role in
studying the origin of the
civilizations on the Chengdu Plain,
in Sichuan, and even in the upper
reaches of the Yangtze River. The
historical site had been listed as
one of the top 10 archaeological
findings in China. In 1999, it was
rated as a key historical and
cultural site under national-level
protection and named "Yufu
Historical Site" according to
archaeological practice.
